Zs

about the artist //
Manipulating extended technique, unique instrumental synthesis, and near telepathic communication, Zs creates work that unfolds sonically over time, evoking unspoken rites and ritual. Although they have been categorized as no-wave, brutal-prog, and post-minimalist, Zs' music challenges the physical and mental limitations of the performer and the listener. Zs was founded in 2000 and includes Sam Hillmer (tenor saxophone), Ben Greenberg (electric guitar), and Ian Antonio (drum set) in its current lineup.

Zs has toured the US several times, playing clubs, galleries, and diy spaces. They have appeared at the Ostrava Center for New Music (Ostrava, Czech Republic), the Open Ears Festival (Kitchener, Ontario), and at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, performing their own work as well as pieces by Louis Andriessen, Petr Kotik, and Earle Brown.

Zs has performed with The Locust, Gang Gang Dance, Animal Collective, Battles, The Dirty Projectors, Orthrelm, The Flying Luttenbachers, Behold... The Arctopus, Yellow Swans, Dan Deacon, Extra Life, and many others. They have recorded for the 31G, Tzadik, Troubleman Unlimited, Planaria, Gilgongo, Sockets, Ricecontrol, and Zum record labels.
